Beckett’s “Sapphire War” Wins First Place!

We are thrilled to congratulate Beckett on winning a first-place ribbon for his spectacular dragon quilt, Sapphire War, at the Card Tricks Quilters’ For the Love of Quilts Quilt Show!

Beckett entered his quilt in Category 800: Beginner/Novice. He began working on Sapphire War when he was just 14 years old, with his grandmother, Debbie, serving as his mentor. She offered guidance and encouragement throughout the project, but Beckett completed all the sewing himself.

The rich black fabric creates a dramatic background for the brilliant sapphire, turquoise, and purple dragon fabrics. The different block sizes, carefully positioned dragon motifs, and striking border treatment give the quilt a bold and imaginative design.

The quilt-show judges praised Beckett’s fabric choices, design decisions, piecing, and exceptional accuracy when cutting the border fabrics. Their evaluation stated:

“Use of black creates a strong backdrop for your vibrant dragon fabric. Variety in scale of the blocks is a successful design choice. Piecing technique is very good. Attention to accuracy in cutting of border fabrics is exceptional. Quilting design is sufficient for this piece. Variegated thread helps to unify all elements. Continue working to improve your binding technique. Binding should be consistent in width and edges should be straight.”

Deb’s Quilt Studio was honored to complete the longarm quilting on Sapphire War. The quilting design and variegated thread were selected to complement the dramatic fabrics and help bring all the quilt’s colors and design elements together.

Winning a first-place ribbon is an outstanding accomplishment—especially for a young quilter entering the Beginner/Novice category. Beckett’s creativity, patience, and careful workmanship are evident throughout the quilt.
